In my previous post I have made a passing reference to Waheeda Rehman’s movie debut. Here is the dance sequence of the teen-aged Waheeda Rehman making her celebrated movie-debut with a bang, with a scintillating dance in the 1955 Telugu movie ‘Rojulu Marayi’ .I think the lyric was penned by Sri Kosaraju Raghavayya and set to great music by Master Venu and rendered spiritedly by Jikki,( G.Krishnaveni).
The song and the dance are about the hopes, the fears and the travails of the rural folk, and the exodus to the cities with the changing times,. But it sounds a reassuring note of hope that things will, after all turn out better, and the village will flourish again and regain its traditional glory. The song and the dance were phenomonally popular through the fifties and sixties and countinue to be popular to this day.
