Come my young friend, till your land. Don’t worry. Your problems will be over, soon.

The late nineteen forties and fifties were a memorable period which began with great euphoria and expectations all across the country, especially so in the rural areas which suffered neglect during centuries of alien rule. There were hopes of far reaching and swift changes in public administration. The people’s representatives and administratiors being of their own ilk, were expected to be exemplary in conduct and scrupulously honest in their dealings. But soon enough there was disillusionment. There was a perception that the rulers had changed but the rules remained unchanged at least to a large extent.
In a recent post of mine I had made a mention of the song YeruvakaSagaro from the Telugu Movie Roajulu Maaraayi and the debut dance of Waheeda Rehman to the song . This song was an expression of the growing sense of disillusionment, and despair over the way things were perceived to be turning out. It also embodies a hope that the rural areas alone held the future of the country in their hands.

Here is my attempt of the lyric into English, followed by the Telugu lyric in Roman script.

You know not how to dupe, how to cheat,
You are plain and simple. You know not the ways of the world.
Come my young friend, till your land. Don’t worry.
Your problems will be over. my young friend.
Take that basket full of the nine types of traditional grains.
Carry it on your head.
Here is the food. Left over from last night .Pack it for your lunch. Take hold of your stave, to prod your oxen. Start now, with your wife beside you.
Come my young friend, till your land. Don’t worry.
Your problems will be over. my young friend.

There are floods all over the west. There is thunder and lightning. And It is raining. Streams and rivulets swell and flow swiftly. The land dry and parched is turning green.
Start my young friend, plough your land,
Your problems are over my young friend.
Adjust, trim and secure your plough across the yoke straight and proper,
Lash the bulls, goad them on, the one on your right, the one on your left, prod them on.
Let not the plough go out of the furrow when you turn around and about.
And when you throw the seeds on your ploughed field , see that they land far and wide and not in clusters.
Start my young friend, till your land, Don’t worry.
Your problems are over my young friend.
People have been selling off their farmland, they are building mansions in the towns.
Some deposit the proceeds in banks. They are not aware of your strength.
Start my young friend, till your land. Don’t worry.
Your problems are over, my young friend.
These guys, they count for nothing in the idyllic villages.
They resort to and make a living, out of politics. They talk tall of serving the public.
They do not exert themselves, they shirk work.
Start my young friend, plough your farm,
Your problems are over my young friend, don’t worry.
There are those who gloat that their chairs are secure.
There are those that wheedle your vote and then forget you altogether.
But , believe, they will come to you, they have no other last resort Just you go ahead with your work.
Times have changed. Times have changed. Yes, they have changed.Times have changed.
Start my young friend, plough your land, Don’t worry.
Your problems are over my young friend.
