Sing with the wilting flowers, Sing with the blossoming buds.

Here is a beautiful song from the 1989 hit movie of Mani Ratnam, –Geetanjali ,featuring Nagarjuna and Girija Shettar in the lead roles. The story is about an young man diagnosed to have only a few months to live. He is distraught, but things begin to change when he comes across a bubbly young girl who is in a similar situation. They decide to make the most of what remained of their short stay on this planet, blissfully together.

The great lyric by Veturi, is the cry of anguish of the young man after he knows of his affliction. It is set to soulful music by Ilayaraja and rendered excellently by SPB.

Here. Is my attempt at translation of this poignant lyric into English Mind you, th Telugu New Year Ugadi, heralds the spring.

Sing out pleasantly. Dainty Dear Season of Spring ! Don’t turn mute now. Please.
Sing. In harmony, – with the hues of the wilting flowers, dropping out.
Sing. In harmony, – with the sweet scent of the buds, blossoming out.
Sing, as the cuckoo has turned silent, wet and cold from the dew.

This spring of my youth burns forth , like a new dawn.
The despair that pervades my mind, conjures up before me, a mirage .
I write simple lyrics of hope, imbue them with a wealth of sweet notes,
About a long and enduring saga. Of mine.
Alas I find, it is going to span, but a few fleeting moments.
Sing out, Of a story that is melting away. Of mine.
Sing out pleasantly.. Dainty Dear Season of Spring.Don’t turn mute now. Please.
Sing. In harmony, – with the hues of the wilting flowers, dropping out.
Sing. In harmony, – with the sweet scent of the buds, blossoming out.
Sing, as the cuckoo has turned silent, wet and cold from the dew.

Sing out,
Of that sweet dawn on which I sang in tandem with parrots and cuckoos.
Of a great dawn on which I touched the heavens and the earth,– the dreams, the reality.
Do sing on this day that heralds the New Year,
On this day as another world draws closer and closer to me. demanding of me to dedicate myself, inexorably to it.
Do sing that I am yet, not a bit of history. Sing about me.

Sing out pleasantly. . Dainty Dear Season of Spring.! Don’t turn mute now. Please.
Sing. In harmony, – with the hues of the wilting flowers, dropping out.
Sing. In harmony, – with the sweet scent of the buds, blossoming out.
Sing, as the cuckoo has turned silent, wet and cold from the dew.

Here is the transliteration of the Telugu lyric into Romam script

Aamanee. Paadavae haayigaa.Moogavai poaku ee vaelaa.

The tribal people you find in the video, draped in shawls and going about holding lanterns, are the Todas of Ooty.
